Israel Accuses Lebanese Army Chief of Working with Hezbollah
Israel has accused Lebanese Armed Forces commander Gen. Rudolph Haykal of cooperating with Hezbollah and blocking the Lebanese government’s efforts against the group, Kan News reported Thursday evening. The criticism comes amid direct talks between Israel and Lebanon and was relayed to the United States, which is mediating between the two sides.
A senior Israeli official told Kan News that Haykal is “fully cooperating with Hezbollah and preventing the Lebanese Army from implementing government decisions.” According to the official, that message was passed in recent days to American officials involved in the negotiations.
Israeli officials worry that information shared with the Lebanese Army through the United States could be passed directly to Hezbollah. About three weeks from now, another meeting in Washington is expected between IDF representatives and Lebanese Army representatives.
At that meeting, Israel is expected to demand concrete Lebanese Army action against Hezbollah activity in villages outside the Israeli security buffer zone in southern Lebanon.
