Syria Seizes Large Arms Shipment Bound for Hezbollah at Lebanon Border

Syrian authorities announced on Tuesday that they intercepted a shipment of hundreds of grenades intended for Lebanon, reportedly destined for the Hezbollah terrorist organization. Customs officials at the Jdeidet Yabous crossing near Damascus stopped a vehicle heading to Lebanon and discovered 226 RGC grenades hidden in secret compartments. A video released by Syrian authorities showed customs officers inspecting the vehicle, uncovering the weapons, and detaining one suspect.

This incident follows a recent seizure of a larger shipment of advanced weapons and missiles allegedly en route from Syria to Hezbollah via the Syrian-Iraqi border. In recent years, Syria has served as a key transit route for Iranian arms shipments to Hezbollah. However, following changes in Syrian governance and regional security dynamics, the new Syrian authorities have publicly announced multiple interceptions of weapons shipments intended for the Shiite group.

Syrian sources have accused Hezbollah of receiving arms transfers through Syrian territory, while Hezbollah has previously denied any operations within Syria. These recent seizures may indicate a shift in regional power balances and Damascus's efforts to restrict smuggling routes that have long supported Hezbollah and its Iranian allies.
