Israeli State Attorney Considers Charging Senior National Security Ministry Official Over Unauthorized Gun Licenses
Israel Avishar, former head of the Firearms Licensing Department at Israel's National Security Ministry, has been notified that State Attorney Amit Isman is considering pressing charges against him, pending a hearing. The allegations involve fraud and breach of trust related to the issuance of firearms licenses after the outbreak of the "Iron Swords" war.
According to the prosecution, Avishar allowed unauthorized individuals to issue tens of thousands of gun licenses to Israeli citizens, including approximately 23,000 conditional approvals and 15,000 final licenses, despite lacking legal authority to do so. The State Attorney's Office views these actions as exceeding the powers granted to Avishar in his official capacity.
The investigation was conducted by the National Fraud Investigations Unit (Yaha) within Israel Police's Lahav 433. The case highlights concerns over regulatory breaches in firearms licensing during a period of heightened security tensions. A hearing will determine whether formal charges will be filed against Avishar.
