Investigation Files Closed Against Itamar Ben-Gvir's Office Staff in Gun License Case

After nearly two years, the investigation files against four employees of National Security Minister Itamar Ben-Gvir's office have been officially closed. The closure follows a recommendation by the Israel Police to end the probe into allegations of improper distribution of gun licenses. The four employees, including Ben-Gvir's legal advisor, Attorney David Bavli, were investigated by the Lahav 433 unit on suspicions of fraud and breach of trust related to the issuance of firearm licenses.

The investigation was initiated under the directive of the State Attorney following claims that numerous gun licenses were granted unlawfully, partly through the minister's office and under his guidance. Bavli, who played a key role in advancing the firearm reform and personally approved over 700 licenses, was among those scrutinized. The probe also examined Ben-Gvir's close circle to assess any connections to the alleged misconduct.

The background to the investigation included a petition by the Movement for Quality Government in Israel challenging the firearm reform, which the Supreme Court ultimately rejected. Despite the legal challenges and ongoing investigations, the firearm reform expanded, allowing hundreds of cities and towns to join the eligibility for gun ownership.

Attorney Bavli sharply criticized the State Attorney for prolonging the investigation, claiming it hindered his career prospects, including a potential appointment as the police legal advisor. He accused the State Attorney of exerting pressure on him through the extended probe. Bavli expressed pride in approving licenses for approximately 700 citizens for self-defense and urged the public to arm themselves, stating, "I am acquitted, but more importantly, you are entitled to carry weapons. Go arm yourselves; it saves lives." The closure of the investigation files was hailed by Ben-Gvir's circle as a victory over the State Attorney's office.
