Two Teens Injured and Man Killed in Jerusalem Balcony Collapse at Angel Bakery

Ron and Tamar, both 16-year-old employees at Angel Bakery in Jerusalem's Rehavia neighborhood, were lightly injured when a nearly century-old balcony collapsed on July 20. The collapse also killed 80-year-old regular customer Barry Levit, who visited the bakery daily with his wife. Ron described hearing a loud boom and seeing dust and debris as the entire shop collapsed, with both teens trapped for about 20 minutes before rescue teams freed them.

Earlier that day, a private engineer had inspected the balcony after residents noticed it sinking and falling stones. The balcony, built in 1930, was legally constructed but had deteriorated over time without proper maintenance. The engineer recommended scaffolding to secure it, but the collapse occurred before repairs could begin.

The Jerusalem municipality coordinated with rescue teams to clear the site and ordered safety inspections of nearby balconies. Initial assessments found no immediate danger, but the city issued a temporary ban on balcony use pending thorough evaluations. Ron and Tamar expressed shock and sorrow over Barry Levit's death, recalling his daily visits and kindness. The incident highlights concerns about aging infrastructure in historic Jerusalem buildings.
