80-Year-Old Barry Levitt Dies in Jerusalem Balcony Collapse at Bakery

Barry Levitt, 80, was killed when a balcony collapsed onto a bakery in Jerusalem's Rehavia neighborhood on Monday. Levitt was sitting with his wife and grandchildren at the Angel Bakery branch when the balcony detached and fell. His wife sustained minor injuries, and four others were also hurt and taken for medical treatment. Emergency teams rescued Levitt from the rubble in critical condition but he was pronounced dead shortly after.

The incident occurred around 17:25 near KKL Street. Eyewitnesses and passersby helped prevent further collapse by physically holding up parts of the structure until rescue teams arrived. A private engineer had inspected the balcony just hours earlier, warning of its dangerous condition and recommending scaffolding, but the collapse happened before safety measures were implemented.

The Jerusalem city engineer, Yoel Even, also visited the scene after the accident. Levitt’s funeral is scheduled for 21:00 at Har HaMenuchot cemetery in Jerusalem. The event has raised concerns about building safety and the urgency of addressing structural hazards promptly.
