Hamas Appoints Khalil al-Hayya as New Head of Political Bureau
Hamas announced on Monday that Khalil al-Hayya has been appointed as the new head of its political bureau. Al-Hayya succeeds Yahya Sinwar, who was killed in a clash with Israeli Defense Forces in Rafah in October 2024.
Al-Hayya first appeared publicly in a televised interview with Qatar's Al-Arabiya channel in October 2023, about a month after surviving an assassination attempt in Doha. During the interview, he spoke about his son, who was killed in an attack, and also about his bureau chief who was killed. He expressed a message of resilience, saying, "Today we live under the shadow of pain, honor, and self-respect. We ask God to help us defeat our enemy. I do not differentiate between my children and any Palestinian child in Gaza."
