Israel Launches 60,000 Shekel Grants to Attract Educators to Northern Conflict Zone

The Israeli Ministries of Education and Finance, together with the Tenufa Administration, have developed a new plan to strengthen education in communities along the northern conflict line. This initiative, part of Government Resolution 3374 aimed at regional rehabilitation and growth, targets the 2023-2024 school year and seeks to attract new educators, support existing staff, and promote educational initiatives in the area.

Under the plan, new teachers and school leaders working within 0-9 kilometers of the border will be eligible for a 60,000 shekel grant, provided they reside within 30 kilometers of the border. Priority will be given to professionals in high-demand subjects such as mathematics, English, computer science, physics, biology, chemistry, technology, healthcare, early childhood education, and educational counseling. Exceptions may be made for other teaching roles if there is a specific institutional need.

Additionally, educators and kindergarten teachers leading approved educational initiatives will receive a monthly incentive of 1,000 shekels. These initiatives focus on academic excellence, social cohesion, STEM and artificial intelligence education, inclusion of students with special needs, innovative learning environments, environmental and sustainability studies, student resilience, and staff well-being.

The plan also includes a program to retrain academics for teaching in high-demand subjects, offering training and grants over three years. Leadership and advanced training programs for promising school managers and educators are part of the four-year framework, with the first year serving as a pilot to refine incentives based on outcomes.

Education Minister Yoav Kisch emphasized the importance of investing in educators as the foundation for the region's future, stating that the grants and initiatives are tools to nurture human capital essential for northern Israel's development. Finance Minister Bezalel Smotrich highlighted the plan's role in fostering economic growth, community resilience, and long-term regional development by attracting quality educators and promoting excellence and innovation in education.
