Bnei Brak Rabbis Order Gender Separation on Sidewalks Near Event Halls, Sparking Controversy

Rabbis in Bnei Brak have recently issued a directive requiring gender separation on sidewalks outside event halls, including on Shlomo HaMelech Street. The sidewalks are divided so that one side is designated for men and the other for women during large weddings and events to manage crowd flow and prevent mixing. This arrangement was reportedly coordinated with the city municipality to address congestion during peak event hours.

Supporters describe the measure as a community-based solution aligned with local lifestyle and helpful for maintaining public order. However, opponents argue that gender segregation in public spaces exceeds the authority of local governments and violates principles of equality. Similar signage was previously placed in the Kiryat Vizhnitz neighborhood, which also sparked debate but remained limited in scope.

The renewed signage has reignited public and legal discussions about the extent to which gender separation can be regulated in public areas and the limits of municipal authority. Initially, the municipality stated that the rabbis' letter was clear and expected compliance from the community, which respects religious leaders. Later, the city clarified that the gender separation call is an initiative by the rabbis directed at the public, with the municipality only assisting in infrastructure improvements due to crowding, and that it is not an official city policy or directive.
