Israeli Leaders Convene at Negev 2026 Conference to Boost Regional Growth and Security

Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu participated in the Negev 2026 conference, held in Dimona and led by the Ministry of Galilee, Negev and National Resilience alongside the Negev Development Authority. The event aimed to establish a foundation for continued growth in the Negev through dialogue among senior government officials, business leaders, and local leadership.

Dimona Mayor Bnei Biton praised the government’s significant investments in the Negev, calling the conference a "day of celebration" for the region’s growth momentum. He urged for tax relief in Beersheba, emphasizing the city’s strength in driving a "new Negev." Biton also highlighted the unity among local authorities in the region.

Beersheba Mayor Rubik Danilovich stressed the importance of enforcement but noted it must be complemented by community development such as sports facilities and education, particularly benefiting Bedouin neighbors. He warned of demographic shifts, noting the loss of a Jewish majority in the Galilee and potentially in the Negev. Danilovich also acknowledged youth migration due to financial incentives offered elsewhere.

Minister Itzhak Vissarlof, praised by local leaders, described his ministry’s approach post-October’s Seven Massacre as cooperative with local authorities, achieving a 96.6% implementation rate on projects. National Security Minister Itamar Ben-Gvir highlighted increased enforcement efforts, including weapons permits, rapid response units, and demolition of approximately 5,400 illegal structures to strengthen governance.

Negev Development Authority CEO Asheret Einav emphasized the Negev’s role as a major growth engine in technology, energy, employment, and education, calling for unified municipal cooperation. Businessman Dovi Frances expressed his affection for the Negev and potential political ambitions. Alona Barkat, owner of Hapoel Beersheba football club, shared the club’s positive impact on youth pride and belonging.

Knesset Speaker Amir Ohana and Education Minister Yoav Kisch underscored the substantial investments and the Negev’s potential as an Israeli growth engine. Netanyahu concluded by urging local leaders to continue expanding housing and signing development agreements, affirming ongoing commitment to the Negev’s development amid rising demand.
