Hamas Considers Handing Gaza Control to Technocratic Committee Amid Ceasefire Deadlock
Hamas is reportedly contemplating dissolving its de facto government in the Gaza Strip to allow a technocratic committee led by Ali Shatat to take over the territory's administration. This move comes amid a stalemate in implementing the second phase of the fragile ceasefire agreement and increasing concerns over potential Israeli military maneuvers in Gaza.
According to Saudi newspaper Asharq Al-Awsat, Hamas leadership is advancing toward announcing the dissolution of the "Government Activity Monitoring Committee," which currently functions as the governing body in Gaza. This step aims to pave the way for the technocratic committee's entry and management of the enclave.
In the coming two days, Hamas and other Palestinian factions are scheduled to hold meetings in Cairo to bridge gaps related to the second phase of the ceasefire deal. The talks will include the United Nations Special Coordinator for the Middle East Peace Process, Nikolay Mladenov, and are expected to feature senior American officials alongside representatives from Hamas and other Palestinian groups.
The discussions in Egypt seek to address ongoing challenges in the ceasefire's implementation and explore political arrangements to stabilize governance in Gaza amid regional tensions and security concerns.
