Hamas Government Resigns to Allow Technocratic Committee to Manage Gaza Strip
Hamas officially announced the resignation of its government to facilitate the entry of a technocratic committee to govern the Gaza Strip. Despite the resignation, Hamas stated that government ministries will continue to operate. Ismail al-Thawabta, head of Hamas's government information office, explained the move aims to promote Palestinian internal reconciliation while protecting the Palestinian people's supreme interests amid ongoing Israeli occupation, blockade, and violence.
This step precedes the planned takeover by the technocratic government, which is part of the Trump administration's "Peace Council" framework. Until the technocratic government assumes control, a temporary "transition network" will manage Gaza, led by Abdel-Hadi al-Agha, a former Hamas official and ex-director of the Waqf and Holy Sites office. Current government officials will remain in their roles under this temporary authority to continue serving Gaza's residents.
An Israeli official described Hamas's resignation as a meaningless spin intended to delay and avoid being labeled as violating agreements. Meanwhile, Palestinian factions in Gaza told the Lebanese newspaper Al-Akhbar that mediators informed Hamas of an understanding with Nikolay Mladenov, head of the Peace Council, to freeze discussions on disarmament and Gaza's accumulated debts. Hamas plans to send a delegation to Cairo to meet Mladenov and implement the agreed terms.
Sources also indicated Hamas intends to dissolve the "government emergency committee" in Gaza in coordination with Egypt and Palestinian factions, provided a specific individual is appointed to manage administrative affairs until the technocratic committee can fully govern the Strip.
