Hamas Plans to Dissolve Gaza's Governing Committee in Major Shift
According to a report by the newspaper Al-Sharq Al-Awsat, Hamas leadership is expected to announce the dissolution of the "Follow-up Committee for Government Activity," which has effectively served as Gaza's de facto government under Hamas control for nearly two decades. This move aims to pave the way for a new "Committee for the Management of the Gaza Strip," led by Ali Shatat, which would replace Hamas's rule with a management committee composed of professionals.
The new committee was established about six months ago, but Israeli authorities have so far refused to allow its members to enter Gaza to begin their work. A Hamas source indicated that the announcement about dissolving the current governing committee could be made as soon as Monday. Meanwhile, another round of talks is scheduled to take place in Cairo soon between Palestinian factions to resolve disagreements over implementing the second phase of the ceasefire agreement.
These discussions may also include senior representatives from the Palestinian Peace Council and the U.S. administration. In recent talks held in Turkey with representatives from Qatar and Egypt, Hamas demanded that the disarmament of its weapons be conducted in stages and that the arms be handed over to a Palestinian authority. Additionally, Hamas insists that Israel commit to withdrawing from Gaza territory as part of the agreement.
