Hamas Considers Relinquishing Gaza Governance to Technocratic Committee as Symbolic Gesture
Hamas leadership in Gaza is reportedly preparing to announce the dissolution of the "Government Activity Monitoring Committee," which functions as the de facto government of the organization in the Gaza Strip. This move, confirmed by sources in Gaza to N12 and initially reported by the Saudi newspaper Asharq Al-Awsat, is intended as a symbolic step to signal mediators that Hamas is willing to transfer administrative control to a technocratic committee.
According to insiders, the announcement is expected to include the dissolution of emergency government committees and the appointment of an interim official to manage the committee until the technocratic body assumes authority over government ministries. However, due to a deadlock in negotiations to advance to the next phase, this step is largely seen as a time-buying tactic by Hamas, with no immediate substantive change in governance, as government offices will continue operating under Hamas control.
Separately, the Israel Defense Forces reported that earlier in the day dozens of Israeli civilians attempted to cross into Syrian territory. IDF forces intervened to prevent the crossing, and the individuals were handed over to police for further processing.
This development comes amid ongoing regional tensions and efforts by mediators to facilitate changes in Gaza's administration. Hamas's symbolic gesture may be aimed at advancing these diplomatic efforts while maintaining its grip on power.
