A terrorist attack occurred outside the Israeli Embassy in Belgrade, Serbia, early Wednesday morning. An assailant armed with two knives attacked a local police officer securing the building, lightly wounding him. The officer drew his weapon and fatally shot the attacker. In response, Serbian authorities raised the national terror alert level to its highest setting.

The incident, which took place around 12:15 AM, involved an attacker who appeared to be a minor from the city of Šabac. He reportedly charged the officer while shouting "Allahu Akbar." The attacker, dressed in black, opened the guard post door and approached the officer, throwing one of the knives and hitting the officer's left cheek. The officer then fired several shots, killing the assailant on the spot. The prosecution has determined the officer acted in self-defense.

Serbian Interior Minister Ivica Dačić stated that the attacker was known to security services, who had been monitoring his activities. Dačić indicated the individual was a supporter of ISIS, citing black flags and symbols associated with the group on his Instagram account. However, no evidence has been presented to suggest the attack was directly planned or directed by ISIS.

This is the second such incident targeting security personnel at the Israeli Embassy in Belgrade within just over two years. In June 2024, an attacker armed with a crossbow injured a police officer guarding the embassy, but the officer managed to return fire and kill the assailant. That incident was also classified as a terrorist attack by Serbian authorities.

The Israeli Foreign Ministry confirmed the attempted attack near the embassy, noting that the embassy was closed at the time and no staff were harmed. Local authorities are continuing their investigation.
