WhatsApp Introduces Usernames to Enable Chatting Without Sharing Phone Numbers

WhatsApp has announced the upcoming launch of usernames, a new feature allowing users to communicate with new contacts without revealing their phone numbers. The rollout will be gradual over the coming months, with an initial phase enabling users to select and save a username before the feature becomes widely available. Most usernames will remain private and only visible to those the user chooses to share them with.

Content creators and businesses can link their existing usernames from Facebook or Instagram by connecting their Meta accounts, helping maintain a consistent identity across platforms. Additionally, users can set a unique key as an extra security layer; new contacts attempting to reach them via username will need to enter this key, providing further control over who can initiate conversations.

Users will be able to create and manage their usernames directly within the WhatsApp app by navigating to Settings > Account > Username. This update aims to enhance privacy and user control over personal information during communication.
