WhatsApp Launches Unique Usernames to Enhance Privacy and Social Features
WhatsApp, the popular messaging app owned by Meta, has officially introduced the ability for users to create and reserve unique usernames on its platform. This new feature allows users to connect, chat, and add new contacts without sharing their personal phone numbers, marking a significant step toward transforming WhatsApp into a social network.
Initially, users can select and reserve their preferred usernames before the feature becomes widely available. For individual users, the username acts as a personal identifier visible only to those they choose to share it with. Content creators and businesses can also link their usernames to their existing Facebook or Instagram accounts to maintain consistent branding across Meta’s platforms.
To address privacy concerns, WhatsApp has implemented an additional security layer requiring new contacts who reach out via username for the first time to enter a unique account key. This measure aims to prevent unwanted messages and harassment by giving users greater control over who can contact them.
This update is part of WhatsApp’s ongoing evolution from a private chat app to a platform with social network features. Meta has previously added community groups, channel subscriptions, and reaction options to messages and statuses. By detaching user identity from phone numbers and adopting public profiles, WhatsApp aligns more closely with platforms like Instagram and Telegram, becoming a more open and global social platform.
Users can already access the settings menu to reserve their usernames. The rollout of the full feature will be gradual, reflecting Meta’s broader strategy to enhance public spaces and user experience within its apps.
