WhatsApp Introduces Usernames to Protect Phone Numbers and Enhance Privacy

WhatsApp is rolling out a new feature allowing users to create and save usernames, enabling contact without revealing phone numbers. The feature will be introduced gradually, starting with an early access phase where users can select and reserve their usernames before the full public launch. For most users, the username will remain private and shared only with chosen contacts. However, creators and businesses can link their existing usernames from Facebook or Instagram through a direct Meta account connection to maintain consistent identity across platforms. Additionally, WhatsApp will offer an optional unique key for an extra layer of security; new contacts must enter this key when initiating communication via username, providing users with greater control over who can reach them. Users can set and save their usernames directly within WhatsApp by navigating to Settings, then Account, and finally Username.
