WhatsApp Introduces Usernames to Chat Without Sharing Phone Numbers

WhatsApp announced a major update allowing users to create unique usernames for messaging without revealing their phone numbers. Starting today, users can reserve a username, which will enable private chats and calls without sharing their phone number, enhancing privacy especially when interacting with new contacts or joining group chats. This feature will roll out gradually over the coming months.

Users can choose usernames up to 35 characters in any language, with the option to link existing usernames from Facebook or Instagram to maintain consistent online identities. WhatsApp encourages personal users to create distinct usernames different from their social media handles. Unlike platforms like Facebook or Instagram, WhatsApp will not suggest usernames to others; contacts must know the exact username to initiate communication.

To further protect privacy, users can set a four-digit key code that others must enter to start a conversation. Existing contacts who already have a user’s phone number will continue to see it, but new contacts will only see the username. Voice calls can also be made using usernames. Despite these changes, a phone number is still required to create a WhatsApp account.

WhatsApp highlighted that username registration is one of the most requested features globally and expects it to be widely adopted. Users can reserve their username now via Settings > Account > Username, with a notification sent when the feature becomes fully available. The update applies to both personal and business WhatsApp accounts.
