WhatsApp Introduces Usernames to Replace Phone Numbers for Privacy

WhatsApp is rolling out a major update allowing users worldwide to create usernames to connect instead of sharing phone numbers. Starting gradually from this evening, users can choose a unique username to initiate chats without revealing their personal phone number, enhancing privacy and control over who can contact them.

Previously, WhatsApp required knowing a person's phone number to start a conversation, which many users preferred to keep private. The new feature targets everyday scenarios like meeting someone at an event, joining a school group, or meeting a new neighbor, enabling communication via username alone. To help users find available usernames, WhatsApp will offer a username generator alongside manual selection.

This update also benefits creators, businesses, and organizations by allowing them to unify their identity across Meta platforms. Users can link their WhatsApp username with existing Facebook or Instagram usernames for consistent branding.

Privacy remains central to the feature's design. Unlike other social networks, WhatsApp will not provide a searchable user directory or account suggestions. Contacting someone for the first time requires knowing their exact username, keeping discovery tightly controlled by the user. Additionally, an optional security key can be set, requiring new contacts to enter this key to initiate communication, adding a further layer of protection against unwanted messages.

Users can enable usernames via Settings > Account > Username after updating to the latest app version. The feature will become available to all users over the coming days as the rollout progresses.
