A new photography exhibition by documentary photographer Ziv Koren, titled "The Way of Waste, 60 Years of the Dan Association for Sanitation," opens on Monday, October 26, at Habima Square in Tel Aviv. The exhibition, which will run for two weeks, offers a rare glimpse into the operations of the Hiriya Recycling Park, one of Israel's busiest waste processing sites. The exhibition is part of Tel Aviv-Yafo Municipality's "Lo Tzricha" (Not Needing) initiative, aiming to provide an alternative to excessive consumerism, especially in light of upcoming shopping events like Black Friday and Cyber Monday.
The exhibition features 30 photographs by Koren, who documented the daily activities and the human element within the intensive work at the Hiriya Recycling Park. The park, spanning approximately 185 dunams (about 46 acres) near Mount Hiriya, handles nearly a quarter of Israel's daily municipal waste from about 30 local authorities in the Gush Dan region. The site operates around the clock, processing, sorting, and transporting waste. The exhibition aims to connect consumer habits with the sheer volume of waste produced, suggesting that the waste itself serves as a testament to our lifestyle.
Created to commemorate the 60th anniversary of the Dan Association for Sanitation, which operates the Hiriya park, the exhibition was previously shown at the park's environmental education center. "The exhibition allows the public a peek behind the scenes of the extensive and fascinating work of waste management," said Reuven Ladianski, Chairman of the Dan Association for Sanitation and Deputy Mayor of Tel Aviv-Yafo. He emphasized the importance of reducing consumption and promoting reuse, recycling, and a circular economy.
The exhibition was designed by Nir Ohayon, who also served as its artistic advisor, and curated by the environmental education center team. The opening event on October 26 will be attended by Tel Aviv-Yafo Mayor Ron Huldai and Ladianski.
