Two Israel Defense Forces (IDF) soldiers, Staff Sergeant Ron Jonathan Reitman, 23, from Ashkelon, and Sergeant Yuval Shay Suilam, 20, from Hod Hasharon, were killed in a shooting attack at the Yehuda Junction near Hebron on Friday. Both soldiers served in the Ari Battalion of the Extraction Brigade. Three other soldiers were wounded, sustaining moderate and light injuries, and were evacuated for medical treatment.

The IDF estimates that the two terrorists, identified as Hamuda and Firas Ju'ba, 27, from Hebron, were on their way to carry out a larger attack against civilians. The soldiers' actions and the roadblock they established prevented this, according to military assessments. Chief of Staff Lt. Gen. Eyal Zamir stated that a more severe attack was averted.

The two terrorists were killed after an exchange of fire and a pursuit by security forces. Initial investigations suggest the soldiers were setting up a roadblock when they spotted the terrorists' vehicle approaching. The terrorists exited their car and opened fire, leading to a prolonged firefight. The IDF is investigating whether the terrorists belonged to a wider terror infrastructure and if they used a vehicle with Israeli license plates.

Security forces are also examining suspicions that a foreign photographer may have had prior knowledge of the attack, as dramatic footage from the scene showed the terrorists being filmed professionally. The motive for the attack is being investigated as nationalistic.

In response to the attack, Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu held a security assessment and ordered an immediate closure of Hebron and preparations for a full lockdown in the West Bank.
