Beit HaLochem is utilizing handcycles as a key component in the rehabilitation process for injured veterans. This activity not only strengthens the body but also empowers individuals to regain mobility, set new goals, and rediscover their sense of capability.
Kobi Leon, a handcycling coordinator and coach at Beit HaLochem, shared his personal journey. "I was injured thirty years ago in Lebanon. I received shrapnel all over my body, and one piece caused damage to my spinal cord. I went from being a fighter and 'king of the world' to barely being able to swat a fly. I didn't want to stay in that situation, and the steps were very small," he recounted. Leon described his immediate connection to handcycling: "The moment I got on a bicycle, I fell in love with this tool. With its power, with its freedom. The open air often helps deal with post-trauma. It gives a feeling of returning to life. The bicycle gives you the opportunity to return to society. It gives great self-confidence for ordinary life."
Meitar Israeli, a social worker at the ICA Center, highlighted the program's benefits. "In the report, we saw how healthy behaviors are truly incorporated in such a place and encourage recovery. The difficulty of the injury is both physical and mental, accepting the change that has occurred. Out of pain, there is a tendency to use stimulants as a desire for relief. The advantage of handcycling is that it is a sport that provides a healthy response and behavior for the riders," Israeli explained.
