Owners of electric vehicles in Tel Aviv are facing a significant increase in charging costs at municipal parking lots operated by Achuzot HaHof. The price per kilowatt-hour (kWh) has jumped from 81 agorot to 1.24 shekels, a rise of approximately 53%. This price hike adds to a series of recent cost increases in the city.

For drivers, a 50 kWh charge, which previously cost 40.5 shekels, will now cost 62 shekels, an increase of 21.5 shekels per charge. For those who charge their vehicles four times a month, this amounts to an additional 86 shekels monthly, excluding parking fees.

The new rates are considerably higher than home charging, which costs about 63.5 agorot per kWh, making the same 50 kWh charge approximately 31.8 shekels at home. This disparity is particularly impactful for residents without private parking or the ability to install home charging stations, for whom public charging is often the primary method.

Tel Aviv Municipality, through Achuzot HaHof, had installed 152 charging stations in 52 parking lots by January 2025, with plans for an additional 50. This initiative was presented as a solution to enable residents without private parking to transition to electric vehicles. The current price increase follows a rise in parking fees last August, where hourly rates for non-residents increased from 20 to 24 shekels, and resident discounts were reduced in some central parking lots.

The charging stations are operated by Milgam EV-Edge, which won the tender in 2020. Unlike home electricity rates, public charging prices are not regulated, allowing providers to set their own tariffs. Achuzot HaHof stated that the tariff had not been updated since 2023 and that the increase is due to rising costs of electricity, operation, and maintenance. The company also noted that even after the update, their charging and parking rates remain lower than those in other locations.
