IDF Destroys Hezbollah's Underground Drone Fortress in Southern Lebanon

By יאיר קראוס, גל גנות

The story · English

The Israel Defense Forces (IDF) destroyed a fortified underground tunnel complex in the village of Majdal Zun in southern Lebanon on Sunday night. The site, over 200 meters long and more than 25 meters deep, served as a major Hezbollah stronghold and weapons storage facility, including unmanned aerial vehicles (drones), warheads, and explosives. The operation, conducted by the 551 Brigade and engineering units under the 91st Division, resulted in a powerful explosion heard across northern Israel.

The IDF described the complex as a significant asset built with Iranian support, containing four launch shafts aimed at Israeli territory and dozens of disassembled drones. The village of Majdal Zun, about 10 kilometers from the Israeli border, is considered a Hezbollah military hub disguised as a civilian area. During the operation, over 20 Hezbollah militants, including about ten from the elite Radwan unit, were killed.

Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and Defense Minister Israel Katz confirmed the destruction of the tunnel network as part of Operation "Sof Pasuk" (End of Sentence). They emphasized that Israeli forces will remain in the southern Lebanon security zone to continue neutralizing threats and protecting Israeli civilians. Israel had informed the United States and its representative in Lebanon in advance about the strike.

Earlier on Sunday, the IDF announced the death of Captain David Hazut, 21, from Ashkelon, commander of a Golani Brigade platoon, who was killed in a clash with a Hezbollah militant near Deir Sirian in southern Lebanon. The militant was later eliminated by Israeli forces.

The operation took place amid ongoing tensions following a recent framework agreement between Israel and Lebanon, which includes partial Israeli withdrawal from some "pilot zones" in southern Lebanon but allows the IDF to maintain control over most of the security zone until Hezbollah's threat is removed. Local councils in northern Israel warned residents about the expected loud explosion and reassured them there was no danger to civilians.
