Respiratory Syncytial Virus (RSV) is a significant cause of hospitalization and death among Israelis over 60, with 15.7% of diagnosed patients dying within 30 days in the 2025-2026 winter. Professor Liran Levi of Sheba Hospital urges awareness of new RSV vaccines, recommended for those over 60 and high-risk individuals, including COPD patients. Studies show vaccination significantly reduces severe illness and mortality.

The story in 5 lines · by baba

  • RSV caused 15.7% mortality in Israeli patients over 60 during the 2025-2026 winter.
  • New RSV vaccines are recommended for Israelis aged 60 and older.
  • High-risk individuals aged 18-59, including COPD patients, should also consider RSV vaccination.
  • RSV poses a severe threat, potentially leading to hospitalization and death in vulnerable populations.
  • Studies confirm RSV vaccination lowers hospitalization and mortality risks in elderly COPD patients.

As winter approaches, attention often turns to flu vaccinations, but a less-discussed virus, Respiratory Syncytial Virus (RSV), is a more frequent cause of hospitalization for the elderly. Professor Liran Levi, head of the Pulmonology Institute at Sheba Hospital, highlights that recent RSV vaccines for adults are not yet widely known, despite the virus posing a significant threat to older individuals and those with chronic conditions. Professor Levi shared a poignant case of a lung transplant recipient who died from RSV after a successful surgery, underscoring the devastating potential of even a single viral infection.

RSV can lead to severe respiratory distress, requiring hospitalization, oxygen support, and mechanical ventilation, even for patients who were previously stable. Data from the 2025-2026 winter season in Israel revealed that RSV was detected in 1,030 patients over 60 across 14 hospitals. Tragically, 162 of these patients, or 15.7%, died within 30 days of diagnosis.

The RSV vaccine is now recommended for individuals aged 60 and above, as well as those aged 18-59 with underlying health conditions that put them at high risk for severe illness. This includes patients with Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD), for whom an RSV infection can trigger severe exacerbations, long-term health damage, and a prolonged recovery period, potentially diminishing their functional capacity permanently.

A large Danish study involving over 74,000 individuals over 60 with COPD demonstrated a clear link between RSV vaccination and a reduced risk of hospitalization, severe COPD exacerbations, and RSV-related mortality during a single virus circulation season.
