Israeli Coach Barak Yitzhaki Takes Helm at Anorthosis Amidst Club Crisis

Israeli coach Barak Yitzhaki has been appointed as the new manager of Cypriot club Anorthosis Famagusta, returning to a club where he previously played in the 2012/13 season. The 42-year-old coach faces a significant challenge, as the team is currently second to last in the league standings. Cypriot media have welcomed Yitzhaki's appointment, noting that his familiarity with the club and its demands creates a positive atmosphere compared to a foreign coach. Fans recall his successful playing career with the team, contributing to the initial optimism.

However, the media also emphasized the difficulty of Yitzhaki's task. He is expected to immediately restore professional stability, fighting spirit, and confidence to a squad that possesses the potential for a much higher league position. His primary challenge is seen as psychological, aiming to rebuild the players' self-belief and change the locker room's mentality, rather than solely tactical adjustments. The club's management is reportedly placing significant hope in Yitzhaki's personality and his understanding of the club's ethos from his playing days.

Amidst the coaching change, the players are under intense pressure. Club president Christos Maragos made a surprise appearance at training, warning that poor performances, like the one in their recent match, will not be tolerated. Reports indicate that all squad players are under scrutiny. Additionally, approximately 200 ultra fans protested at the team's facilities, blaming the players and the previous coach, Nestor el Maestro, for the current situation.

Yitzhaki has already begun his work, observing players in his first training session and intervening minimally. He is expected to implement his professional demands starting immediately. He is joined by Borja Llama, who previously served as interim coach for Hapoel Tel Aviv. Anorthosis anticipates Yitzhaki will bring the winning mentality he displayed as a player to the sidelines, aiming to guide the team back to winning ways.

Yitzhaki's debut match will be against Omonia Aradippou on Saturday. Notably, his opponent will be Yiannis Okkas, a former teammate from Yitzhaki's playing days at Anorthosis in 2012/13. The reunion, 13 years later, will see them face each other as opposing coaches at the Antonis Papadopoulos Stadium, presenting Yitzhaki with an opportunity to start his tenure positively against a familiar figure.
