Israel's Ministry of Health has issued an urgent public warning following the identification of a stray dog infected with rabies in the Modi'in region. The medium-sized, white dog with brown spots and prominent udders was observed on Sunday in the communities of Lapid, Nachal Modi'in, and Ganei Modi'in. Reports of the dog were also received from the community of Matityahu. To date, one person who was exposed to the rabid dog has been directed to receive urgent preventative vaccination. Additionally, two domestic animals were reported to have been attacked by the dog. The Ministry's epidemiological investigation is ongoing to identify further contacts.

The Ministry of Health is advising anyone who had direct contact with the dog, or whose pet had contact with the infected dog or any stray animal in the area between October 5 and October 19, 2026, to urgently contact the Ramla Health Bureau at 08-9181202 or their nearest health bureau. Outside of operating hours and on weekends, individuals should go directly to the emergency room of the nearest hospital. Parents are urged to question their children who were in the area about any possible contact with the dog or other stray animals. Pet owners who suspect their animal may have come into contact with the dog should immediately contact their local veterinarian for guidance. The Ministry emphasized that in case of any bite or scratch from an animal, the area should be immediately washed with running water and soap for approximately 10 minutes, disinfected, and prompt medical attention sought from the health bureau for preventative treatment.
