Maccabi Tel Aviv's recent 0-0 draw against Bnei Sakhnin underscored the team's significant reliance on captain Dor Peretz, who has become the club's barometer and face. Despite speculation about potential moves to Beitar Jerusalem or abroad after a less successful season at Venezia, Peretz remained with Maccabi on a contract that met his demands.
Peretz's importance is evident in his scoring record this season; he netted eight of Maccabi's first 18 goals across five games, and in every match he scored, the team won. This dependency became starkly clear when Peretz failed to score against Bnei Sakhnin's defensive setup, and Maccabi couldn't find the net either, resulting in the draw. The article notes this reliance is potentially dangerous, as it hinders the team's ability to win without his goals.
Beyond his club role, Peretz is also a key player for the Israel national team. Coach Ran Ben Shimon admitted a mistake in not starting him against Ireland. Peretz's strong performances have solidified his status both internationally and domestically, where he is considered the most complete player in the Israeli Premier League.
Looking ahead, the team faces challenges with other players like Ofek Malka expected to handle increased pressure, and Isco returning to a stadium where he previously made errors. However, the narrative surrounding Dor Peretz remains central, especially as Maccabi Tel Aviv aims to overcome a recent head-to-head disadvantage against Beitar Jerusalem. Peretz will need to deliver his full capabilities to secure a win.
