A year-long price comparison of 114 products across five major Israeli supermarket chains reveals that the overall cost of a typical grocery basket has remained nearly unchanged, increasing by only about 0.5%. However, this overall stability masks significant price hikes for some individual items, while others have seen substantial decreases.

The study, conducted by C14 using data from Pricez between October 2025 and October 2026, found Rami Levy to be the cheapest chain, despite a slight increase in its basket price. Conversely, Carrefour Market remained the most expensive, even with a minor price reduction. Rami Levy's basket cost rose from 1,198.39 shekels to 1,204.90 shekels, a 0.54% increase. Carrefour Market's basket price decreased marginally from 1,452.15 shekels to 1,450.73 shekels, a 0.1% drop, leaving a significant 245.83 shekel gap between the two chains for the same items.

Other chains showed varied results: Youhananof saw a slight decrease in its basket price, while Victory experienced a moderate increase. Uni-Store recorded the largest overall basket price increase among the chains, rising by 18.88 shekels.

The analysis also highlighted dramatic price shifts for specific products. For instance, the price of 200 grams of granulated instant coffee surged by 35.4%, from 24.30 to 32.90 shekels. White potatoes increased by 40%, and dry onions by 32.4%. Tomatoes also rose by over 20%. In contrast, avocados saw a significant price drop of 44.6%, and beets, sweet potatoes, melons, and Persian rice also became cheaper.

These findings underscore that while the total grocery bill may appear stable, consumers may be paying considerably more for certain staples while saving on others. The report advises shoppers to monitor prices of regularly purchased items and compare overall basket costs to manage their expenses effectively.
