Gal Erel, a former prominent player and coach for Hapoel Haifa, has filed a substantial lawsuit against the club in the labor court. The legal action, initiated in recent weeks and handled by his lawyer Shai Elias, seeks hundreds of thousands of shekels in unpaid pensions and social benefits accumulated during his tenures as both a player and a coach.
Erel, who had a long association with the club, playing for them in two separate periods (2008-2013 and 2017-2023) and later serving as an assistant coach and head coach, parted ways with the team mid-season last year. His coaching stint, which began in June 2025, ended in January 2026 after a string of poor results, including a loss to Bnei Reineh.
This lawsuit follows similar legal actions by other former Hapoel Haifa players, including Eden Ben Basat and Gili Vermouth, who are also seeking outstanding payments. Representatives for Erel declined to comment on the report, and Hapoel Haifa had not yet responded by the time of publication.
During his playing career, Erel was a key figure for Hapoel Haifa, captaining the team and contributing to their victories in the Toto Cup in 2013, the State Cup, and the Champions of Champions Cup in 2018. He transitioned to coaching after retiring from playing in the summer of 2023.
