Firefighters from the Binyamin regional station responded Sunday to a fire that broke out on the balcony of an apartment in Modi'in Illit, caused by the explosion of an electric scooter battery while charging. The blaze began after residents reported an explosion from one of the buildings, with heavy smoke billowing out. Fire crews extinguished the fire, searched for trapped individuals, and cleared heat and smoke. No one was found trapped inside the apartment.

Incident Commander Barak Gurovi stated that the incident highlights the severe danger posed by charging batteries of electric vehicles, which can ignite intensely and spread rapidly. He noted that the scooter was charging on the balcony, which prevented a disaster, as charging inside the apartment could have led to the fire and smoke spreading into the living space and endangering lives.

A fire investigator from the Israel Fire and Rescue Services is en route to the scene to determine the cause of the incident. The Fire and Rescue Services reminded the public to use only standard batteries and chargers according to manufacturer instructions, never leave electrical devices charging unattended, and avoid charging batteries near flammable materials or escape routes. They also advised installing smoke detectors for early fire detection and to evacuate and call emergency services at 102 in case of a battery fire.
