Israeli musician Erez Halevi died at his home in Rehovot at the age of 71. Halevi, whose career peaked in the 1980s, was known for songs including "Thus Nature Created You," "The Night," and "The Fishermen."

His sister-in-law, Tammy Salomon, wrote on Facebook that Halevi was a "great artist who touched the hearts of so many with wonderful and unforgettable songs," and a "special, sensitive person" who left behind a "great musical legacy and soul."

A family friend, Yaakov Waxman, confirmed Halevi's death to Haaretz, stating that the musician had been living alone in Rehovot and was in poor health. "He probably died in his bed four days ago, and by chance, people passed by and discovered he was gone," Waxman said, calling it "one of those sad stories."

Halevi, born in Rehovot in December 1954, began his musical journey in his youth playing classical guitar. At 19, he participated in the Kol Yisrael radio program "First Yields" and received a scholarship from composer Moshe Vilensky. He later moved to Tel Aviv and began writing original material. He was discovered in 1982 after participating in a young talent competition held by Matti Caspi at his club, "Shamayim." Caspi agreed to produce Halevi's first album, which was released two years later by CBS. Caspi produced and played all instruments on the album, while Halevi wrote and composed all the songs, including the title track "Thus Nature Created You" and "The Fishermen."

Halevi released his second album, "Intermediate State," in 1994, produced with Miki Laderman, which included a new version of "The Night." The album did not achieve significant success. In the late 1990s, he recorded more songs with music producer Ilan Virzberg, releasing a single called "Ancient Land" that was intended for a third album that was ultimately shelved. His 2008 album, "The Gate Is Open," produced by Sagi Zakoski, also failed to achieve commercial success.

In a 2012 interview, Halevi attributed his lack of wider success to "self-destructive tendencies" and a failure to appreciate his own work. He also mentioned his divorce as a period that "paralyzed me creatively for a long time."
