The Israel Philharmonic Orchestra has launched its 90th season with an October program blending classical music, chamber concerts, children's shows, Israeli pop, and the iconic "Star Wars" soundtrack. The season opened with music director Lahav Shani conducting works by Joseph Bardanashvili, Sibelius, and Mahler, featuring violinist Nikolai Sheps-Znaider and soprano Hen Reis. Bardanashvili's new composition was commissioned by the orchestra.

Shani returns on October 14 with a program including Thomas Adès' Piano Concerto and Richard Strauss' tone poem "Ein Heldenleben." Pianist Kirill Gerstein, a past winner of the Arthur Rubinstein International Piano Competition in Tel Aviv, will perform Adès' concerto, which was written for him. The program also features Paul Ben-Haim's "Pastoral Variations" with clarinetist Ron Zelka.

Concerts are scheduled for October 14, 16, 17, and 18 in Tel Aviv. Gerstein will also perform chamber music on October 17 with orchestra musicians, playing Schumann's and Brahms' piano quintets at the Zucker Hall.

Cellist Misha Maisky will perform Ernest Bloch's "Schelomo" under Shani's baton on October 19 in Jerusalem, October 21 in Haifa, and October 22 and 24 in Tel Aviv. The same program includes Ben-Haim's "Pastoral Variations" and Strauss' "Ein Heldenleben."

Expanding its genre offerings, the orchestra will host Israeli singer Riki Gal on October 26, performing her hits in new symphonic arrangements. Tomer Hadadi will conduct, with Amos Ben-David as music director and Guy Mintus on piano.

From October 29 to November 1, the Heichal HaTarbut will screen "Star Wars: A New Hope" with the orchestra performing John Williams' Oscar-winning score live. Ernst van Tiel will conduct.

Children's programming includes a musical adaptation of Meir Shalev's "Daddy Makes Mistakes" on October 17, featuring brass quintet music. A "story hour" for younger children on October 18 will combine acting with a small ensemble playing music by various composers.
