The Norwegian Nobel Committee has awarded the 2026 Nobel Peace Prize to Navanethem Pillay, an 85-year-old South African lawyer and former UN High Commissioner for Human Rights. The committee cited her "efforts to promote peace and international law," specifically highlighting her role in prosecuting war crimes, crimes against humanity, and genocide. Pillay's extensive background includes serving as a judge at the International Criminal Court (ICC) from 2003 to 2008 and as chairperson of the UN International Independent Commission of Inquiry on the Occupied Palestinian Territory, including East Jerusalem, established in May 2021.

In June 2022, Israel's Foreign Ministry condemned the commission's work following its initial report, with Israel's Ambassador to Geneva, Meirav Eilon Shahar, accusing Pillay and other commission members of "anti-Israel bias." In September 2025, the commission, under Pillay's leadership, accused Israel of committing genocide in Gaza, concluding that "genocidal intent was the only reasonable conclusion" based on its analysis of Israeli actions, including "the use of starvation and inhumane living conditions." Israel vehemently rejected these accusations, labeling the report false and politically motivated.

Pillay served as UN High Commissioner for Human Rights from 2008 to 2014. The Nobel Peace Prize, unlike other Nobel Prizes awarded by Swedish institutions, is decided by the Norwegian Nobel Committee, whose members are appointed by the Norwegian parliament. Norway officially recognized "Palestine" as an independent state in May 2024 and, in September of this year, announced its intention, along with other European nations, to impose trade restrictions on goods from Israeli settlements.

Last year, the Nobel Peace Prize was awarded to Maria Corina Machado, an opposition politician from Venezuela, who reportedly gave her medal to then-U.S. President Donald Trump.
