Raad Abu Alqiaan, a civilian contractor working for Israel’s Defense Ministry, was killed on Wednesday when a building collapsed in Jabalia in the Gaza Strip. Abu Alqiaan was a resident of Hura in the Negev. The IDF said the incident was an “operational accident,” and added that “his family has been updated. The IDF and the Defense Ministry share in the family’s grief.”
The report notes that during the war, several contractor employees working for Defense Ministry projects have been killed. In January 2025, Kobi Avitan was killed while operating engineering equipment on the Netzarim Corridor after being mistakenly identified and shot by IDF forces. The first such case was Liron Yitzhak, who died of his wounds after being hit by a mortar shell in Gaza. Later, David Libi was killed by an explosive device in the engineering vehicle he was operating.
In the Lebanon front, Aamer Hujirat, a resident of Shfaram who worked for a contractor carrying out engineering work for the Defense Ministry, was killed in April by a Hezbollah explosive drone. The article says these contractors have not been recognized as IDF fallen soldiers, even though they worked for the army.
Instead, in death they receive a narrower status, as “victims of hostile acts” rather than “IDF and security forces fallen.” The current definition is meant to distinguish between battlefield deaths in organized military combat and civilian victims of terror, but the article says it does not fit the reality on the ground today, where contractors can find themselves deep inside active combat zones.
