Jerusalem's Magistrate Court convicted Member of Knesset Ofer Cassif on Thursday of assaulting a police officer under aggravated circumstances during a protest in the southern Hebron Hills in May 2022. The conviction comes more than four years after the incident.

According to the indictment, Cassif attempted to drive his vehicle towards the protest area but was prevented from doing so by police for security reasons. Following an argument, Cassif entered his car, reversed, and then drove forward, hitting an officer's leg. He then exited the vehicle and struck the officer on the head with his hand.

Prosecutors argued that both impacts were intentional and aimed at hindering the officer's duties. Cassif maintained that the vehicle contact was accidental and the subsequent strike was an instinctive act of self-defense.

The indictment against Cassif was filed in January 2024 by Attorney General Gali Baharav-Miara. Following his conviction, Cassif stated outside the courtroom, "This is part of the other camp's campaign. There are ministers with convictions for serious offenses, there is a Kahane minister, and there are daily criminal acts in the West Bank."
