The Jerusalem Magistrate's Court convicted Member of Knesset Ofer Cassif on Thursday of aggravated assault of a police officer during a protest in the southern Hebron Hills approximately four years ago. According to the indictment, Cassif attempted to drive his vehicle towards the protest area, but police prevented him due to security concerns and the road's access to Area A. Following an argument, Cassif drove his car backward several meters and then forward, hitting the officer's leg. He then exited the vehicle and struck the officer on the head. The Jerusalem District Prosecutor's Office argued that both actions were intentional and aimed at obstructing the officer. Cassif's defense that the car incident was accidental and the subsequent strike was self-defense was rejected by the prosecution, citing video evidence and eyewitness accounts. The prosecution further stated that Cassif's actions did not qualify for self-defense or parliamentary immunity. "This is part of a campaign by the other side. There are ministers with serious convictions, there is a Kahane-ist minister, and there are daily crimes in the West Bank," Cassif stated outside the courtroom. The Attorney General, Gali Baharav-Miara, filed the indictment against Cassif in January 2024.
