  • Supreme Court hears challenge to disqualifications of candidates and lists.
  • Balad chairman Sami Abu Shehadeh and MK Ofer Cassif are among those disqualified.
  • National Security Minister Itamar Ben-Gvir supports the disqualifications.
  • MK Ofer Cassif protested, calling the disqualifications 'fascism'.
  • The court's decision could significantly impact the nation's fate.

Israel's Supreme Court is holding an expanded hearing with nine justices to review the Central Elections Committee's decision to disqualify several candidates and lists from running in the upcoming 26th Knesset elections. The individuals and parties facing disqualification include Balad party chairman Sami Abu Shehadeh, the Joint List, the Ra'am party, and Knesset Member Ofer Cassif.

During a protest outside the courthouse, MK Ofer Cassif declared, "We will fight fascism and bring justice, peace, and a prosperous future for all our children. Palestinians and Israelis, Jews and Arabs. This is our vision and we will not give it up. We will defeat fascism and it will be thrown into the dustbin of history."

National Security Minister Itamar Ben-Gvir, who supports the disqualifications, argued that Abu Shehadeh's statements regarding the October 7th Hamas attack demonstrate his unsuitability. Ben-Gvir cited Abu Shehadeh's alleged claim of not knowing the "dimensions of the massacre" and questioned if he "didn't see the vans driving on the boulevards? Didn't see a girl being executed live?" Ben-Gvir also mentioned an expert witness who reportedly called Hamas "freedom fighters."

Supreme Court President Yitzhak Amit stated at the opening of the hearing that decisions to disqualify lists are subject to the Supreme Court's interpretation and can significantly impact the nation's fate. The court's ruling will determine whether the Central Elections Committee's disqualifications are upheld.
