Supreme Court Hears Cases on Disqualifying Arab Israeli Knesset Candidates

The Israeli Supreme Court is currently deliberating on petitions to disqualify several Arab Israeli politicians and their parties from running in the upcoming 2026 Knesset elections. The candidates facing potential disqualification include Sami Abu Shehadeh, chairman of the Balad party, and Knesset Member Ofer Cassif. Additionally, the court is considering the disqualification of the Ra'am party and the Joint List alliance.

Initial assessments suggest that Abu Shehadeh may indeed be disqualified, while the court is expected to overturn the disqualifications for the other candidates and parties. The petitions were filed by the Otzma Yehudit party, represented in court by Minister Itamar Ben-Gvir and MK Tally Gotlieb, both lawyers by profession.

Outside the courthouse, Minister Ben-Gvir engaged in a verbal confrontation with Balad supporters protesting the disqualification petitions. Ben-Gvir reportedly called the protesters "terror supporters."

The panel of judges hearing the case is led by President Yitzhak Amit and includes Justices Daphne Barak-Erez, David Mintz, Yael Willner, Ofer Grosskopf, Alex Stein, Gila Kenfy-Steinmetz, Khaled Kabub, and Yehiel Keshet.
