Israeli Filmmakers Launch Counter-Narrative to Controversial Gaza War Documentary

In response to the international distribution of the documentary "Nezah," which presents testimonies from former Israeli intelligence personnel alleging misconduct during the Gaza conflict, three Israeli filmmakers have released their own film, "Nezah: The True Story." The original film, which premiered at the Venice Film Festival and won a jury prize, is based on interviews with 24 anonymous Israeli intelligence and military personnel and has drawn sharp criticism in Israel from political and security figures. The Israel Defense Forces (IDF) have rejected the claims in the original film, stating it relies on unverifiable anonymous testimonies.

"Nezah: The True Story" aims to present a different perspective on the war, featuring interviews with IDF commanders and intelligence officers, alongside operational documentation and materials allegedly gathered during combat. The new film focuses on three main issues: the fight against Hamas's terror infrastructure, the operational complexities surrounding hostages, and the effort to deliver humanitarian aid within a war zone.

Beyond refuting claims against Israel, the filmmakers intend to shift the focus to Hamas's actions. They raise questions about Hamas's alleged use of civilian structures for combat, the deployment of terrorists in civilian attire, the storage of weapons in civilian buildings, and the alleged diversion of humanitarian aid. Using firsthand accounts, captured materials, operational footage, and video clips, the creators seek to provide international viewers with evidence from the ground, rather than general statements.

The film positions itself as an offensive, not defensive, work. Instead of leaving Israel in an accused position, the creators aim to spotlight Hamas and its alleged integration of the civilian population into the combat arena. The production involved discreet public relations efforts by the three filmmakers, with some filming conducted at night on Tel Aviv rooftops. The identities of other individuals involved are being withheld for security reasons.

"Nezah: The True Story" is expected to be available with English subtitles, intended as a public diplomacy tool for international audiences, journalists, and opinion leaders. For its creators, the effort is not just about what happened in Gaza, but about controlling the narrative and shaping how the international community perceives the events.
