Israel to Mark Third Anniversary of October 7 Massacre with National Memorial Events

Israel is preparing to observe the third anniversary of the October 7, 2023, massacre with several memorial events. The official National Day of Remembrance ceremonies are scheduled for Monday, October 5th. The Ministry of Defense will host the first ceremony at 11:00 AM at the Mount Herzl memorial complex in Jerusalem, honoring fallen IDF soldiers and security personnel. President Isaac Herzog, Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, and Defense Minister Israel Katz are expected to attend and deliver speeches, alongside the IDF Chief of Staff, the Police Inspector General, and heads of the Shin Bet and Mossad.

A second ceremony, commemorating civilian victims of the October 7th attacks, will take place at 2:00 PM on the same day at the victims of terror memorial, also on Mount Herzl. State leaders are also slated to participate in this event. Attendance at both official ceremonies requires pre-registration and confirmation, with specific invitations extended to families of fallen soldiers for the first and families of terror victims for the second.

These national observances are occurring amidst a highly charged political climate, with the country gearing up for elections. Organizers are anticipating potential disruptions during politicians' speeches due to heightened political tensions, exacerbated by ongoing reports about Prime Minister Netanyahu allegedly ignoring prior warnings before the October 7th attacks, which he denies.

The government will hold a special session on October 6th dedicated to remembering the victims. Families of the victims, former hostages, and activists will conduct their own memorial ceremony on October 7th at 9:15 PM in Tel Aviv's Yarkon Park, open to the public. This event will feature performances by various Israeli artists and will be hosted by a former Hamas hostage and an actress.

Earlier on October 7th, at 6:29 PM, a ceremony will be held at the memorial near Kibbutz Re'im to honor those killed at the Nova music festival. The "October Council," an organization representing victims' families and former hostages, has announced protest activities for October 7th, including a moment of silence at 6:29 AM, motorcades, and a gathering in Tel Aviv's Hostages Square.
