Israel to Mark Three Years Since October 7th Attacks Amid Political Tensions

Israel will commemorate the third anniversary of the October 7th Hamas attacks next week with a series of state-sponsored and family-led events. The official state ceremonies, organized by the Ministry of Defense, are scheduled for Monday, October 5th. The first ceremony will take place at 11:00 AM at the Garden of the Nation on Mount Herzl, featuring addresses from President Isaac Herzog, Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, Defense Minister Israel Katz, IDF Chief of Staff Eyal Zamir, Police Commissioner Danny Levi, Shin Bet head David Zini, Mossad chief Roman Gofman, government ministers, and bereaved families. A second state ceremony will be held at 2:00 PM the same day at the Mount Herzl Memorial Site for Victims of Hostile Acts, also with speeches from state leaders. Attendance at both state events requires pre-registration and confirmation.

These state ceremonies are expected to be politically charged, occurring just 22 days before national elections, and preparations are being made for potential disruptions. The events are further intensified by ongoing publications regarding Prime Minister Netanyahu's alleged dismissal of prior warnings before the October 7th attacks, which he denies receiving. The timing of the state ceremonies, two days before the actual anniversary, aligns with a previous government decision to hold the commemoration annually two days after the Simchat Torah holiday. Both state ceremonies will include lowering flags to half-mast and a wreath-laying ceremony. Additionally, the government will hold a special session on October 6th to mark the events.

In parallel, the national memorial ceremony organized by October 7th families will take place on Wednesday, October 7th, at 9:15 PM in Tel Aviv's Yarkon Park. This event is open to the public and will feature performances by numerous Israeli artists including Miri Mesika, Eden Golan, Shlomo Artzi, and others, and will be hosted by former hostage Eli Sharaabi and actress Shani Cohen.

The Nova party massacre victims will be memorialized on October 7th at 6:29 PM at the memorial site in Re'im. This ceremony, hosted by Tamir Steinman, will include performances by artists such as Amir Benayoun and Ninette Tayeb.

Furthermore, the 'October Council,' an organization representing bereaved families and former hostages, has announced protest activities for October 7th. These will commence with a moment of silence at 6:29 AM, followed by convoys, testimonies, and a gathering at Hostages Square.
