Yair Golan, chairman of the Democratic Party, has sharply criticized Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu regarding the escalating cost of living in Israel. Golan's remarks came in response to a video posted by Netanyahu at a gas station, which Golan used to highlight the economic struggles faced by Israeli citizens under Netanyahu's leadership.

The criticism coincides with a significant fuel price hike announced by the Fuel and Gas Administration at the Ministry of Energy. Effective midnight between Wednesday and Thursday, October 1, 2026, the price of a liter of 95-octane unleaded gasoline at self-service stations will increase by 52 agorot, reaching 8.27 shekels. For full-service stations, the additional charge remains 26 agorot. In Eilat, which is exempt from VAT, the price will rise by 44 agorot to 7.01 shekels per liter.
The administration attributes the steep increase to global energy market developments and includes an update to the excise tax, which was previously reduced by 50 agorot via a temporary order.
