Hamas Northern Commander, Mastermind of Terror Attacks, Eliminated

The elimination of Azz al-Din al-Bik, commander of Hamas's northern brigade, represents a significant blow to the terrorist organization's military capabilities in the Gaza Strip. Meir Ben Shabbat, head of the Misgav Institute for National Security and former National Security Advisor, stated that understanding the significance of this strike requires looking back to 2008. At that time, al-Bik was responsible for special operations for the military wing in northern Gaza, planning a series of complex, high-profile attacks.

According to Ben Shabbat's article in Israel Hayom, al-Bik was the mastermind behind a June 2008 attempted attack where a terrorist cell tried to breach the Gaza border fence near Nativ HaAsara using an armored bulldozer, covered by mortar fire, until an IDF tank destroyed it. Weeks earlier, he was behind a failed attempt to infiltrate the Erez crossing with a truck bomb carrying four tons of explosives, coinciding with a commando assault.

Ben Shabbat noted that the similarities between these past terror plots and the October 7 invasion plan are not coincidental. Al-Bik's extensive operational experience made him a key asset in rebuilding Hamas's military strength in northern Gaza, managing intelligence systems, and planning attacks against security forces.

His removal from senior command is particularly important now, as Hamas attempts to advance kidnapping plots to gain leverage and force Israel to halt assassinations and withdraw its forces. This underscores the necessity of continuing intensive targeted elimination operations at all levels, Ben Shabbat concluded.
