Top Legal Officials Seek Knesset Candidacy Ban for Sami Abu Shahadeh

Israel's Attorney General and the State Prosecutor have asked the Supreme Court to disqualify Knesset candidate Sami Abu Shahadeh from running for office. They argue that his support for armed struggle against Israel, particularly in the context of the October 7th Hamas attacks, falls under the legal grounds for disqualification.

In a document submitted to the court, the legal officials cited an article Abu Shahadeh published on October 8, 2023, one day after the Hamas assault began and while it was ongoing. They contend this article expresses support for Hamas's armed conflict against Israel. The Attorney General and State Prosecutor stated that Abu Shahadeh's actions are central to the disqualification clause in Israel's Basic Law: The Knesset.

Furthermore, the legal filing claims that Abu Shahadeh's subsequent explanations for his statements, along with other evidence and his overall conduct, are "deceptive, partial" and do not adequately address the core allegations against him. This follows a TikTok video posted by Abu Shahadeh on October 10, 2023, where he described the Hamas attack as a "significant strategic political event" and accused Israel of incitement and murder.

Abu Shahadeh has denied the accusations, stating during the proceedings, "I opposed the crimes and atrocities of October 7th. I wrote against them in Arabic, Hebrew, and English. I don't believe people can say such things about me." He asserted, "I have never supported armed struggle, not against the State of Israel nor against any other country."
