Lexus ES Redesigned With Full Electric Option, Enhanced Hybrid

Lexus has launched the eighth generation of its ES sedan, a model that has been a cornerstone of the brand since its 1989 debut. The new ES, previewed during a drive event in Scandinavia, is built on the TNGA GA-K platform, shared with the Toyota Camry, but Lexus emphasizes it offers a significantly more premium experience. The redesigned sedan is larger than its predecessor, measuring 5.14 meters long, 1.92 meters wide, and 1.56 meters high, with a wheelbase of 2.95 meters. It competes with models like the Volvo S90/ES90, Genesis G80, and Audi A6/A6 e-tron.

The exterior features a sharper front end with distinctive L-shaped daytime running lights, while the main headlights are positioned lower. The rear is characterized by a slim light bar and L-shaped units on the bumper. The profile adopts a coupe-like silhouette with a long hood and a sloping rear window. Interior enhancements include a horizontal dashboard, ambient lighting, and premium materials like bamboo trim on higher trims. The cabin aims for a "living room on wheels" feel, with new front seats offering better support and available rear seats with leg rests, heating, ventilation, and massage functions. A 12.3-inch instrument cluster and a 14-inch floating infotainment screen with OTA updates and wireless smartphone connectivity are standard.

A significant addition is the fully electric version, the first for Lexus, which impressed reviewers with its quietness, smooth acceleration, and adaptive suspension. This electric model offers a range of 525-581 km (WLTP) from its 77 kWh battery, with charging speeds up to 150 kW. While a more powerful 343 hp electric variant (500e) exists, it will not be offered in Israel due to perceived low market demand. The hybrid variants, expected to be the volume sellers in Israel, include the 300h model, which uses a 2.5-liter engine and electric motor producing a combined 201 hp, achieving a claimed fuel economy of 20.8 km/liter. A more powerful 224 hp hybrid (350h) is also available but offers minimal performance gains over the 300h, and all-wheel-drive hybrid options will not be imported.

Lexus claims the new ES represents an improvement in all relevant metrics, including ride quality, equipment, and technology. The electric version, in particular, is highlighted as a major leap forward, especially with its adaptive suspension. While the hybrid model lacks adaptive suspension and its powertrain can be noisy under load, it still offers the familiar benefits of low fuel consumption, spaciousness, cabin quietness, and peace of mind, making it the likely choice for most buyers.
