Israel Imposes Record Fine for Reckless Jet Ski Incident on Sea of Galilee

A jet ski operator has been fined a record 15,000 shekels by the Tiberias Magistrate's Court for dangerous conduct on the Sea of Galilee. The court also ruled that the individual faces 75 days in jail if the fine is not paid. The ruling reflects a stricter approach by Israel's judicial system to water safety violations.

During several days in June, the operator engaged in risky maneuvers, exceeding the speed limit of five knots (approximately 10 km/h) while towing an inflatable ring with two people. He performed these actions within 15 meters of the shoreline and crossed the permitted 300-meter zone, endangering his passengers and other swimmers.

In addition to the fine and potential jail time, the individual is prohibited from similar offenses for three years, with a potential 5,000 shekel conditional payment if violated.

The Kinneret Cities Association praised the verdict, emphasizing their commitment to prosecuting actions that threaten public safety. Eric Tal, head of the control and enforcement department, noted that safety regulations were tightened in June, increasing the critical distance from the water's edge to 100 meters, with violations leading to prosecution.

Izhak Gavish, deputy head of the department, reported hundreds of safety violations and dozens of significant incidents this season. Authorities are utilizing drones and surveillance cameras to enforce order and have issued hundreds of 730 shekel fines for noise disturbances on official beaches. Officials believe these substantial penalties will deter reckless behavior on the water.
