Record Fine Issued for Reckless Jet Skiing on Sea of Galilee

A precedent-setting fine of 15,000 shekels was imposed on a jet ski operator for dangerous and speeding violations on the Sea of Galilee. According to the indictment, the defendant operated the jet ski at speeds exceeding 5 knots, performing dangerous maneuvers close to the shore, approximately 15 meters from the coastline, over several days in June. The operator was carrying a passenger and towing an inflatable tube with two additional people, exceeding the 300-meter limit from the shore while increasing speed and executing risky maneuvers that endangered both the passengers and beachgoers.

The Magistrate's Court in Tiberias sentenced the defendant to the 15,000 shekel fine, or 75 days in prison in lieu of payment, and an additional 5,000 shekel suspended sentence for three years, contingent on avoiding similar offenses. Arik Tal, director of the supervision and enforcement unit at the Kinneret Cities Association, stated that the association will maintain zero tolerance for offenders violating maritime safety regulations, especially those endangering swimmers. He noted that enforcement has been intensified since June, including doubling the distance from the shoreline for violations of maritime safety regulations from 50 to 100 meters.

Yitzhak Gavish, deputy director of the Kinneret Cities Association's supervision and enforcement unit, reported that hundreds of maritime safety violations occurred during the recent bathing season, including dozens of serious incidents. These involved operating vessels near designated swimming beaches, endangering swimmers and other watercraft, and dealing with intoxicated boaters and public order disturbances. Gavish also observed a decrease in noise violations, attributing it to high fines, and noted improved discipline among boaters, aided by the use of drones and smart cameras for real-time documentation. He added that hundreds of noise violation reports were issued, as most designated beaches are quiet zones.
