Irish Player Accused of Racist Slur Against Israeli Midfielder
During the Republic of Ireland's 3-0 victory over Israel in the UEFA Nations League on Sunday, Irish player Jason Molumby allegedly directed a racist slur at Israeli midfielder Eli Elimelech, calling him a "monkey." Israeli players claimed Molumby had been verbally abusive throughout the match.
Molumby reportedly complained to the referees about alleged racist chants directed at his teammate, Adam Idah. However, the match officials did not record these claims as racist, which will prevent the Football Association of Ireland from facing disciplinary action. The incident was not included in the referee's official match report.
Molumby has a history of disciplinary issues. In early 2024/25, he was suspended for five games and fined £16,000 for striking an opponent. West Bromwich Albion's appeal against a red card he received was unsuccessful. During the 2025/26 season, he was sent off twice within 18 minutes, leading to his team's loss.
Molumby previously played with Israeli internationals Bibras Natkho and Tomer Hemed at Brighton & Hove Albion. The defensive midfielder played 88 minutes in the recent match and is expected to start in the return leg.
